About Family Health Center

Since Moses L. Walker and his colleagues opened the doors for the first time in 1971, Family Health Center (FHC) has been serving community members who are in need of quality and compassionate healthcare. From humble beginnings in a converted trailer to the current state-of-the-art $10 million facility on the same plot of land at the corner of Paterson and Burdick Streets, FHC has become the county’s only Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). FHC has also been accredited as a community-based health center by the National Committee for Quality Assurance for over a decade.

What began as a group of dedicated community advocates, volunteer doctors, nurses and assistants is now, more than 53 years later, one of Michigan’s most highly recognized FQHCs. Our team offers comprehensive health services at three locations, with an additional set of mobile health and dental units. Our staff administers approximately 165,000 patient visits annually as part of our commitment to serve the community members of Kalamazoo.

Our leadership and staff at FHC are also passionate about community engagement. Our annual events include the Dr. Lisandra Soto Dental Day of Caring and Back to School Bash. FHC also provides Medical Assistant training to community members interested in pursuing this career path.

One of the hallmarks of FHC is our compassionate staff. We are grateful to all our team members who remain dedicated to honoring Mr. Walker’s legacy and mission of keeping our community members healthy and strong. As we continue our mission to provide quality health care to everyone, we remember our promise to treat our patients with dignity and respect.

Our President & CEO

Denise Crawford

President & CEO

As President and CEO of Family Health Center (FHC) since 2009, Ms. Crawford‘s perpetual innovation has steadily expanded healthcare services to all people in Kalamazoo, regardless of their ability to pay. Her vision and dedication to improving access to quality healthcare for all people, coupled with her decisive leadership and ability to collaborate effectively, has positioned FHC to receive over $55 million in private, federal and state awards.

Ms. Crawford has expanded facilities in critical neighborhoods to accommodate an additional 20,000 patients over the past 13 years. She has also created dedicated facilities for dental and behavioral health services, launched physical and occupational therapy services, and helped make specialty care delivery like psychiatry, physical therapy and occupational therapy easier for patients to access. Some of her other achievements include acquiring mobile and mobile dental units to expand care for students and family members in the public school system and completing a $15 million facility expansion in one of Kalamazoo’s most historically underserved neighborhoods.

At the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Ms. Crawford quickly developed and expanded FHC’s telehealth remote patient monitoring to accommodate over 128,000 telehealth visits. She also responded swiftly and proactively to provide more than 125,000 curbside prescription pick-ups and over 500 unique testing and vaccination events. As a result of these services, more than 30,000 COVID-19 vaccines were administered to people who may not have otherwise had access.

Ms. Crawford remains committed to using her extensive expertise to improve access to quality healthcare for everyone in the community. Currently, she leads a team of over 250 colleagues who serve more than 45,000 patients annually.

Prior to joining FHC, Ms. Crawford served as Director of Physician Services and Ambulatory Care, Director of Strategy and Corporate Services, Director of Borgess Family Medicine and Vice President of Ambulatory Behavioral Medicine Services for Ascension Borgess Health Alliance.

Ms. Crawford graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Arts in science and a Master of Social Work before receiving a Master of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame. She is a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo and a proud patient of FHC. She understands the complex issues people may be facing and serves the community by offering wisdom, compassion, dignity and respect.

Our History

FHC opened in 1971 to address the unmet medical needs of low-income and minority populations in Kalamazoo County. From a temporary space in a converted trailer, FHC has grown to five high-quality health care facilities with state-of-the-art services, plus mobile health and dental clinics, all serving our community.
